Cantata Collective Program 8
The Pacific Boychoir Academy will be performing with the Cantata Collective two chorale works from composer Johann Sebastian Bach: Jesu, der du meine Seele and Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin. Both were composed in the 1700s as part of his first cantata cycle: music ot be played on Sundays and feast days.
The first cantata to be performed is Jesu, der du meine Seele (Jesus, You, who are my soul). The cantata is remarkable for its widely contrasting affects: meditative profundity in the opening chorus, nearly joyful though hesitant bouncing in the second movement, and despair in the third.
The second cantata will be Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin (With peace and joy I depart). The first and last are set for choir as a chorale fantasia and a closing chorale. The third movement is unified by a continuous “motif of joy” in the accompaniment.
The Cantata Collective is:
Marc Schachman, oboe
Kati Kyme, violin
Lisa Weiss, violin
Anthony Martin, violin and viola
William Skeen, cello
