October 31-November 1, 2006—SFO to Newark to Hamburg to Herning

We seem to always have early flights out of SFO, and this tour was no exception. We flew Continental from SFO to Newark for starters. We had only about a 90 minute layover, which quickly evaporated with a flight delay. We got to Newark and they were holding our second plane for us. Fortunately, we were in the same terminal and didn't have to go through security as we did on the way back from Brasil. We flew Continental because they had the best price, but their service was excellent, particularly when you compare it to other carriers that charge you for pretzels to fly cross-country. Our bus was right outside in Hamburg, along with hour driver Leo. It is pretty darn cold.

We stopped at a truck stop for lunch. The woman at the food counter didn't speak any English, but she spoke German. So Jeremy translated and gave everybody their instructions for ordering.

We couldn't get to Herning too early, so we stopped at a castle in Kolding that dates from the 1100s. While there, the cold and windy weather became a light snow. "Sne" in Danish or something like that. Before leaving, we changed money at the bank, and Mr Tarango and I borrowed Jeremy to translate, but the woman's English was perfect.

We traveled on to Herning to meet the billet families about 4:00 p.m.
