July 14, 2007— to Vicenza and Malcesine

We took a morning sightseeing tour of Vicenza, known for its Renaissance architecture. We also saw an original Roman road that had been found under he modern town. After an hour of sightseeing, we got an hour of free time in chaperone groups. We went to the countryside for lunch, but we'll get back to that. After lunch we returned to the hotel for rest period and some free/swim time. Then an evening snack at a villa in the hills, and a concert in Malcesine at the north part of Lake Garda. The castle courtyard was covered, so with the ceiling and the stone walls, the venue actually had good acoustics. There was a piano there, so we did some difference music, including the Mozart Gloria and the Faure Cantique. After the concert, there was a reception and we walked through the medieval town on the way out.

This day will forever be remembered for lunch. It was the second-biggest meal I've ever had, and the largest with the whole group (the staff had a huge meal in the Czech Republic in 2004). Today's menu:
Breadsticks & bread
polenta with salami
bigoli ("worms" pasta)

salad
meat (ribs, chicken, pork)
dessert
The meal took two hours, in an amazing setting, resembling Napa Valley but with different buildings

Thus far one of the big behind-the-scenes story is how Continuum has really risen to the occasion to become leaders. They set a good example, and also have been actively helping out the younger boys. In this year, where camp staff will be more from PBA than from ABS for the first time, the older guys are really showing how to help the tour go smoothly and leave a legacy for the net generation of tenors and basses.
