Well we made some new friends today. We loaded the bus at 10am and drove to Podenone, where we stopped for lunch in the old part of the town, though most things were chiuso. It's hard to tell if things are closed because owners are on holidays or because we just happened to get places when they're on siesta from the heat. It's been quite warm, 90's every day, and very humid.
Most people had pizza or pasta in their groups, and maybe some gelato, and we went from there to Cordenons (or was it also Pordenone?) to meet the host families. The homestay situation is not quite what we expected since some boys are in pairs but there are also two big groups (11 and 15) staying together. There are a couple choirs in town and it would seem the local girls choir is hosting us, at least the families that aren't on vacation. We all reconevened for a meeting with the mayor and dinner but the dinner place wasn't ready to we took a little excursion past Aviano Air Force base towards the Alps (Austria is just on the other side!).
We came back for a great small-town dinner: long picnic tables, paper tablecloths, potato chips, pasta, some meat, some soda. The local teenagers had set up a speaker system and so after dinner they asked us to sing a couple songs for them, and then they put on some music for everyone to dance. Unfortunately the video camera was out of juice since this was an event to behold. The girls, greatly outnumbered of course, were teaching the boys some of the dances, and this went on for an hour or so. Another unique experience touring can bring to the guys. I couldn't help but think about how we often get asked how guys in a boys choir or boys school can meet girls. The photos can attest they didn't seem to have any trouble getting along, and it always seems the guys get plenty of attention from the girls, especially on tour.
Having trouble finding internet, but we'll find an internet cafe in Venice to update the last few days, then updates might not get posted until we get to Roma.
