Today we connected with the other choirs from Classical Movements' Melodia festival. We went to one of the samba schools. The samba schools compete to be one of the schools chosen for Carnaval. The school has a bateria of drummers, as welll as dancers. They sang and danced, then we sang and danced. No description can match the photos below. Each of the choirs sang for each other, and we recruited some of the bateria to join us for Mas Que Nada. Not sure it was successful, but it was fun to try. It was fun to see some other people speaking English. There are four Melodia choirs, from Winnipeg, Miami, Washington DC, and Minnetonka. The City of God choir from Brasil was there, and we exchanged gifts with them.
After the samba school, we went to Sugarloaf Mountain, where you need to take two trams to get to the top. Sugarloaf is the sideways rock at the mouth of the bay. As someone afraid of heights, it was a little unnerving. A few guys sat in the dead center of the trams. Peter and Tim climbed the outside.
We tried to squeeze in a little beach time before dinner. Mr. Tarango and I got into a scuffle with a guy who really wanted my watch. Time to go.
After showering, we met in the hotel restaurant to watch ourselves on the 7pm news showing us and the other choirs at the samba school. There were a few other people in the restaurant, and they thought it was funny how we all cheered when we saw somebody in green on TV. Christina said she would try to get a copy for us.
We're having some trouble finding time to convert video files to make tour movies. There's a techinical issue that requires a lot of battery time from the laptops and the cameras, and we don't often have the time to both shoot and edit. We have a lot of video though.
For dinner, we met up again with the Melodia choirs at a pizzeria. All the choirs sang again. The Minnetonka chohir found out it was Sir Collin's birthday, and invited him up to be sung to, along with one of their girls who was having her birthday. We were told to do things we could all sing together. We sang four songs (?) including Hey Jude, with Mr. Kula on the ellectric keyboard.
All the choirs are very nice and I got to meet their directors. The guest conductor for the festival is Doreen Rao, a very famous conductor, composer, and arranger. We have some of her music in the PBA library She had just flown in. Not sure if we'll have a chance to talk much, but it was good to meet her finally.
Boys got e-mail addresses from some of the girls, and we headed back to the hotel for the night.
