In 7th grade, PBA students begin studying Latin, using a multidisciplinary curriculum that combines traditional vocabulary and grammar with lessons in Roman history and culture, mythology, the etymology of English words, writing assignments in both English and Latin, and hands-on projects that blend research and creativity. At the end of their first year studying Latin, our 7th graders even write their own children’s books in Latin! And of course, Latin forms an important link between our academic and music curricula, allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of the music they perform.
In March of each year, PBA students participate in the National Latin Exam, matching their Latin skills against those of other middle and high school students all over the country. In 2020, three of our students received Certificates of Merit, indicating that they placed in the top 15% of beginning Latin students nationwide!
