Sausal Creek Field Trip

Science in our local, natural environment! PBA’s Elementary School students in 3rd and 4th grade recently conducted Field Work at Sausal Creek in Oakland. Prior to their trip, they explored the history of the creek through the book, I am Sausal Creek. Led by intrepid science teacher, Leo Knudtson, PBA students hiked up the creek on a mission to understand the state of health of this important watershed. On the way, students made measurements at several points, measuring temperature and pH, sampling for sediments and measuring flow velocity. These data points came back to the classroom, where students discussed what they mean for water purity and health of the ecosystem. They made arguments about how the creek can become polluted, as well as formed ideas about how they could improve the health of the creek and surrounding environment. This was a great learning adventure focused on science learning. Along the way, though, the students couldn’t help breaking into song once or twice!
